Johnny Drum Private Stock

Johnny Drum Private Stock

Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

101 Proof

Not only does Johnny Drum Private Stock win the title of “Hardest Bottle to Get Open” (seriously, I had to use a knife to cut away half the waxing), it also happens to be a damn fine bourbon.  Produced by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, this is the oldest and best of the Johnny Drum line.  There is no age statement on the bottle, but this used to be advertised as a 15 year old bourbon.  The fact that they aren’t saying that anymore leads me to believe it’s probably more like a ten year now, but I could be wrong.  Again I beg you whiskey producers of America–please be more upfront with what is in your bottles.  Also, I love you.

Right off the bat you can smell the oak, followed by a very garden-like, earthy, fresh floweriness that is very pleasant, and goes well with the candied apple and smoke that are also present.  Not an overly full nose, but an interesting one nonetheless.  On the palate I immediately love this bourbon.  It’s very hot for about one second, and at 101 proof I’m surprised it’s not longer, then it immediately mellows out and you get a quick punch of vanilla, cherry, nuts and oak, again very earthy.  It’s like a spicy hot right jab then a sugary sweet left hook and then you are on the ground smiling, and it’s all over.  The finish is short and smooth. It tastes old, like from the past–I think I said this about the Willett Pot Still Reserve too.  Maybe it’s a KBD thing, who knows.

This is a dangerous 101 proof whiskey–it’s so easy and awesome to drink!  Really, a great whiskey for any time of day, even breakfast!

This is a great value bourbon, and one that I will absolutely buy again.

Rating: 8.2 / 10

Bought at Total Wine and More in Greenville, SC for $30–if you haven’t been to this store check it out, it’s like a supermarket for booze.
